Internal Politics in Hiring: How to Navigate Through

While intracompany politics may appear significant, they influence hiring decisions and may sway what is genuinely best for the company. To avoid such biases in recruitment, an employer and hiring managers may use some of these strategies to have fair and effective recruitment:
- Acknowledge Political Dynamics: In the first hurdle to internal politics, you acknowledge that it exists.
- Promote Open Communication: Ask the team members to disclose possible biases or political influence so that candidates can be reviewed and chosen with more objectivity.
- Set Clear Criteria: Establish well-defined and measurable hiring standards to reduce subjective bias. This can be listed as specific skills required or standardized assessments for each candidate.
- Diversity in the selection committee: Appoint members from various backgrounds and departments to ensure an all-rounded approach to candidates’ evaluation. Diversity counters personal and politically backed biases.
- Non-disclosure: Ensure professionalism by not disclosing candidature discussions to candidates. This reduces the injection of external factors that interfere with the entire process of making the final decision.
- Use third-party recruiters and consultants: Seek third-party information when internal politics makes recruitment challenging.
- Close Feedback Loops: Organize feedback with all the stakeholders after each hiring cycle to determine whether politics influenced the selection and appointment of candidates. This process will enable an organization to increase its recruitment efficiency in the future.
Organizations will be better equipped to transcend internal politics and hire according to the company’s best interest, with quality candidates to fit the needs.
Internal politics are generally unavoidable; however, forward management can significantly reduce their impact on hiring. A fair and efficient recruitment system should be transparent, objective, and continually improving.
